Dr George Barnsby

Dr George Barnsby, who died on April 11 at the age of 91 in Wolverhampton, was a leading radical activist and historian of the working class movement in the Black Country. Born in London in a working class family, his father died when he was only three years old. Now his mother had the sole responsibility to take care of her two infant sons in dire circumstances. The vicissitudes of his early life made George aware that the ‘station in life’ of many people was determined by their social and economic status. He certainly was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

He left school at 15 and did some ordinary jobs. He showed little interest in politics at that time. However, around the age of eighteen he became a reader of Daily Worker. It was the period when Nazism had emerged as the dominant voice of militarism and in many countries in Europe and the United States fascist parties emerged. Their model was the German Nazi party and their hero Adolf Hitler. When the Second World War started the young George was called up in 1939. At that time, he was 20 years old. When he went to fight for his ‘king and country’ his worldly possessions were two suits and a bicycle. He recalls in his ‘Subversive – One Third of the Autobiography of a Communist’ that for obvious reasons some people had more interest in ‘our country’ than he did!

He was sent to Burma. He experienced there inhumanity of the war and destruction caused by the Japanese. His contact with India and Indians subject to the imperial Raj gave him a broad political insight and awareness of the role of colonialism and imperialism. The Bengal Famine of 1943-44 occurred under the British rule. It is estimated that around 3 million Indians died from starvation and malnutrition. The Bengal government reacted to the disaster with little efficiency, and refused to stop the flow of rice from Bengal. George was an eye-witness to the apathy of the British rulers towards their subjects. There was no shortage of food in the British quarters either. There are still some hard questions about the role and knowledge of the British Prime Minster Winston Churchill into the affair. For instance, when the Secretary of State for India, Leo Amery, and Lord Wavell requested him an urgent release of food stocks for India, Churchill responded with a telegram to Wavell asking, if food was so scarce, ‘why Gandhi hadn’t died yet.’

The end of the Second World War saw the defeat of fascism and militarism in Germany and Japan. But no such harm came to the Spanish fascism under Franco. The Soviet Union and its Red Army in the Great Patriotic War had borne the brunt of the war on the Eastern Front. With the Allied victory, the army conscripts returned to their homes. In 1946, George was demobbed, receiving a gratuity of about £100. This sum he used to get further education. First, he matriculated from Regent Street Polytechnic before he went to the London School of Economics where he obtained a B.Sc. Honours degree there. From Birmingham University he gained an M.A. degree by writing ‘Social Conditions in the Black Country’ and then from the same university he earned a Ph.D. degree on his thesis ‘Working Class Movement in the Black Country 1750 to 1868′. His studies and committment to revolutionary Socialism that wanted to serve the interests of the working class had taken the central stage in his life. He was to struggle for these objectives for the rest of his life.

When he came to Wolverhampton in 1954, he became the secretary of the local Communist Party. This was the period when the Cold war was in full swing and in the United States anti-Communist crusade of McCarthyism had become the new credo of the Cold War allies in the West. In Britain, Communists were looked upon as traitors; they were spied upon and their telephones tapped. Obviously, George like other Communists was also regarded as subversive and he had to confront what came his way.

The range of his social, academic and political activities in the Black Country extends over vast areas. He wrote a number of histories and pamphlets on Socialism, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Housing and the Radicals in the Black Country.

One major area of communal activity was around Bilston College of Further Education. Some teachers of the College and governors realised that many working-class people were excluded from formal institutional education who formed unqualified work force with little basic skills. Among the excluded were a disproportionate number of people from ethnic minority communities, mainly Afro-Caribbean and Asian. George was an active educator and a leading voice in the new approach to uplifting the working class people and providing them with education that met their needs. This progressive approach in a multicultural and multi-ethnic society was to counterbalance the legacy of Enoch Powell and his followers.

When American President George W. Bush and his close ally, Prime Minister Tony Blair, started their genocidal war of aggression against Iraq and the subsequent destruction of Iraq and Iraqis, George steadfastly opposed the imperial war. For him, the Anglo-American war in Iraq was a crime against humanity, a genocide, and its central figures the war criminals who need to be brought to justice. He focused on Bush and Blair and their allies, writing extensively on their policies on his website and informed the populace of the realities of the cover-up of their crimes and their incessant lies.

George Barnsby is survived by his wife Esme and two sons, William and Robert.

Stop the War Coalition demonstration in London

October 26, 2009

Dr George Barnsby, The Barnsby Blog, No. 957, October 26, 2009

Today’s website of Barack Obama again shows a splendid animated portrait of the President’s First Lady but the question of whether she is more warlike than the President who promised so much to the world only a month ago be stating that he would ban all nuclear weapons, but has only of yet intensified the conflict by sending more troops to Afghanistan and elsewhere. Today we have had reports of the great demonstration in London which the Observer  reported  held up the traffic in Central London as  the tens of thousands of protesters marched from Hyde Party to Trafalgar Square
in a series of event organised by the Stop the War Coalition. Highlights were the procession being led by Lance Corporal Joe Glenton who bids fair to become a national hero at the same time as he is prosecuted by the military for refusing to return to the fighting in Afghanistan .No less heroic are the parents of soldiers who have perished in the conflict. Peter Brierley whose son was killed in Iraq in 2003 who refused to shake hands with Tony Blair and told him he had blood on his hands for which he would pay. He also was leading the parade whose theme, of course, was the ending of wars, bringing the troops home and allowing their peoples to solve their own
problems.

Dr Barnsby’s letters to Gordon Brown and David Cameron

May 13, 2009

The Barnsby Blog, May 13, 2009

The following message has been emailed to  Gordon Brown today:

Dear Gordon,

When are you going to stop supporting the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere?

When are you going to oppose the daily slaughter of innocent civilians and our own troops?

When are you going to cease to be a party to Torture supported by and initiated by your own government?

And when are you going to understand that ending the wars will release such a flood of money that the Economic Slump we are currently suffering from would disappear overnight?

A second message was sent today to David Cameron:

Dear David

When are you going to stop supporting the wars in Iraq and  Afghanistan and elsewhere and making yourself an accessory to the Torture sanctioned by the Brown government?

And when are you going to understand that ending these wars will release such a flood of money that the Economic Slump we are suffering from would disappear overnight?

And when are you going to end your hypocrisy of pretending to be a democrat when you do not reply to my correspondence?

A reply to this email is requested.

The famous anti-racist, anti-war activist, a historian of the working class movement and revolutionary politics Dr George Barnsby turned 90 on January 29, 2009. To celebrate the occasion the Barnsby family organised a memorable birthday party in which more than one hundred guests took part.

The site of the event was Wolverhampton, now a thriving multicultural and ethnically diverse city in the Midlands, where once, in 1968, British Tory leader Enoch Powell had made his well-known apocalyptic ‘rivers of blood’ speech, in which he had warned the danger Britain faced because of the coming into Britain of non-white immigrants from the former British colonies. But the subsequent history of race relations in Wolverhampton has shown that the alarmist forebodings of the prophet of doom and racist reactionary politician were false.

The main reason for rejecting what Enoch Powell stood for that also had certain amount of backing in some sections of the white population was due to the incessant work of local politicians and workers, both from the white and non-white communities for creating a positive attitude towards the race issue and to cultivate a better understanding between the people of different ethnic backgrounds. As a result, we see that Wolverhampton emerged as a multicultural city we can all be proud of. Among those who contributed much to such a positive development the work of George Barnsby has a special significance. He was also able to mobilize support for his work with the assistance of many non-racist people and organizations.

From Norway, I had the honour to participate in the celebrations of my close comrade and friend. It was my first face-to-face meeting with him. The comradely affection and esteem he extended towards me on the occasion was something of an overwhelming experience for me. Our comradeship was very deep. Ever since our incidental contact that started about four years ago, I realised that ideologically and politically both of us were working on the same lines having a common world-outlook. In our own ways, both of us have been busy offering our views and showing our concerns through our websites.

Dr Barnsby consistently exposed the role of President Bush and his British ‘poodle’ Tony Blair in starting the genocidal wars of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan as well their active support to the Zionist rulers of Israel to crush and destroy the people of Palestine. His expertise in understanding the international affairs as a class conscious writer and his revolutionary zeal in advancing the cause of peace and human rights earn him a special place of distinction among radical writers. I feel greatly honoured to have seen and talked to him and wish him many happy and active years in the future. His website (The Barnsby Blog: <http://gbpeopleslibrary.co.uk/blog/>) provides us with a necessary corrective to what the main stream media offer and I recommend it to our readers.

Mind the gap

October 18, 2008

George Barnsby, Oct 17, 2008

We have divided the world into nuclear maniacs who are prepared to see the world destroyed and civilised people who wish to survive and the gap between them widens every day. An article in the Guardian today by Seumas Milne who says that civilian dead are a trade-off in Nato’s war of barbarity. In this year alone for every occupation soldier killed at least three Afghan civilians have died at the hands of the occupying forces.
They include the 95 people, 6o of them children killed by a US assault in Azizabad in August;  the infamous wedding guests dismembered by US bombardment in July and the four women and children killed in a British rocket attack six weeks ago in Sangin.

The most comprehensive research into Afghan war casualties has been by Marc Herold, a US professor at the University of New Hampshire. In his latest findings Herold estimates that  the number of civilians killed since 2006 is  3,273. But most telling is   the change of military tactics underlying these figures. Close air support is now the favoured practice which means that the infantry call up air support and those killed are inevitably civilians. The tactics is self defeating, even the puppet Afghan president has railed against Nat’s recklessness with Afghan blood, but it inevitably creates further resistance and the demand that these imperialist forces leave their country. There is no possibility that the war in Afghanistan can be won any  more than there is in Iraq and the only choice the imperialists have is to leave at once or to be chucked
out.

STOP THE WAR PROTEST FROM LEFT ALTERNATIVE

September 16, 2008

Dr George Barnsby, Sep 14, 2008

Preparations for protest against the war in Iraq, now in its sixth
year, are being made by all organisations opposed to the war. They will continue with protests at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester on 20th September at 12-30am.

On its internal business Left Alternative reports the resignation of
John Lees and Lindsay German from their National Council. The remain, however members of Left Alternative. John has been a tireless member of the officer’s group from the inception of Respect in difficult political circumstances while Lindsey has been our inspirational mayoral candidate in the Greater London elections of both 2004 and 2008.

Another protest is being arranged by People before Profit who are
calling for lobbies of MPs in support of a windfall tax on energy firms which are making multi-millions in profit while implementing huge rises for ordinary people. Has your MP signed the call for a windfall tax? Supporters are also asked to protest at local Tesco’s when profits are announced at the end of the month.

All these are most worthy campaigns and the heat is now building up on Brown now for his opponents to either sack him or leave him be.

This emphasises once again that the only way to be rid of Brown NOW is either a Citizen’s Arrest of Brown inside Parliament or outside it to stop
the slaughter of innocent children and people in Iraq and Afghanistan and bring him to justice before the Court of Human Rights at the Hague for Crimes against Humanity. George Galloway and Ken Purchases have not replied to me asking them to do it, so we might be suggesting that other left militant MPs such as those on Labour Briefing take up the cudgels to end the war and make themselves public heroes by getting Brown and Blair locked up NOW.
